Pond Walking
A Memory of Carshalton.
About 1949/50 I was 10.The ponds had dried up because there was no water coming from the spring in the corner where the Grove entrance met the High Street.
There used to be a set of steps that went down into the pond at that point. If my memory is right they were wrought iron. I say this because in the light of later experience I know the difference between cast & wrought iron.Anyway we,my brother John & I & 4 or 5 mates, one of whom was named Peter Britton & another John Pamplin made our way down the steps & across the dried up pond, under the North Street bridge & across the War Memorial pond to Honeywood Lodge where we stepped over the chain & out.
There were weeds & some small tufts of grass across the bottom of the ponds so the drought had gone on for some time.
Does anyone else remember the ponds drying up?
