More about this scene
Castle Douglas lies close by the main road from Dumfries to Stranraer at the north end of Carlingwark Loch. Until the end of the 1700s it was known as Carlingwark. It was renamed Castle Douglas in 1792 after Sir William Douglas laid out a new village on the site of the old. It was once a centre for the hand spinning of cotton, but was unable to compete with the industrialized mills of New Lanark. However, its strategic position made it into an important coaching stop, and hotels sprung up to cater for the visitors. When the railway arrived in 1859, the town's status as a regional centre for rural Galloway was assured.
