More about this scene
Grand Parade (right), housing the post office and Arthur Hopkins' butcher's shop, was newly built at the time this picture was taken. It replaced the Railway Hotel, built in 1856 and demolished in 1902. The station entrance sign can be glimpsed behind Hill's footwear store (centre). A uniformed postman stands beside the drinking fountain, whilst among the onlookers by the pavement are two telegraph boys.
