More about this scene
Well before it became a favourite bathing and picnic spot, the Lune's beauties at Caton were extolled by the poets Wordsworth and Gray, and Turner came to paint the scene. The first bridge was built in 1806, but it collapsed in 1881 and travellers had to resort to the original ford until the present structure was opened two years later.
