More about this scene
Caversham boasts a famous bridge spanning the Thames, first recorded as long ago as 1231. Henry III ordered the Keeper of Windsor Forest to deliver to Andrew, Sergeant of Caversham, one good oak to make a boat for ferrying poor people over the water of Caversham. The cost of using the bridge was evidently too prohibitive. During the Edwardian era, when this view was taken, Caversham was a popular address for affluent Reading residents. Much of the village lies on the north bank of the Thames, in the vicinity of the Henley road.
