More about this scene
The house was begun by William Cavendish, fourth Earl and later first Duke of Devonshire, in 1687 and completed in 1706; the north wing was added between 1820-30. Royalties from the Ecton Copper Mine in the Manifold Valley enabled the house to be furnished on a lavish scale. Between 1760 and 1817 the profits from Ecton were in excess of £335,000. In 1886 the house was open to the public from 11.00am to 4.00pm during the week, and from 11.00am to 1.00pm on Saturdays. Admission was free.
