More about this scene
This very rare photograph, taken around 1876, is captioned the Palm House, but it shows what was usually known as the Great Conservatory. Demolished shortly after the First World War, this magnificent structure was the brainchild of Joseph Paxton; at the time of its completion in 1840, it was the largest conservatory in the world. Using the experience he gained at Chatsworth, Paxton went on to design the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition in London in 1851.
