More about this scene
This elegant early 19th-century building was built around 1820 by Mr Archdale Palmer, a London tea merchant, and remained in his family for several generations. It is reputed that Mr Palmer rode on horseback from here to his offices in London every day, taking about an hour for the journey. The house was severely damaged by a V1 flying bomb which fell in these well-kept grounds on 21 July 1944, leaving a crater measuring 8 x 14 feet, and the building was subsequently demolished.
