Without doubt, Cheddar Gorge is the most spectacular natural phenomenon in South-west England. The gorge cuts its way out of the carboniferous limestone as if it was in the Peak District of Derbyshire; it is an underground cavern whose roof has collapsed, leaving soaring cliffs and crags of unsurpassed grandeur. Note the Frith photographer's dwarfed carriage waiting patiently far below.
