The Old Vicarage

A Memory of Cherry Hinton.

We came to Cherry Hinton 1960/61
My father somehow acquired renting the old vicarage on a temporary basis as he had just got a new job with Pyes and we stayed there until 1966.
We were a family of 8 Mum Dad 2 sisters 3 brothers
Family name Curtis and I am second youngest Vikki.
The vicarage was a great place to grow up in.I was 5 when I arrived and went to the infants school which was next door.
My elder siblings all attended Cherry hinton JUNIORS and Netherhall
I remember the big empty rooms that we used to play in ,the family room and kitchen were the only rooms really lived in and I shared a large bedroom in the front of the house with my 2 sisters as that was easier to heat.We were there during the winter of 1963 when the snow came half-way up the doors and we found "mysterious" very large footprints outside the back windows.
We had great fun living and playing, watching the weddings across the road at St Andrews from a good viewpoint up in the brances of a very high tree in the vicarage grounds
Of course its not there now having been pulled down and replaced by a block of flats
I also remember Bert from across the road .He ran a very good village stores and mum used to shop there always.
One day she forgot she had taken my younger brother in his pram, and left him outside the shop, and walked across the road with her only shopping! Of course Bert soon realised what she had done and when he pushed the pram.home for her and returned my brother she was horrified that she had forgotten him.

Any way good times indeed
If anyone has an old photo of the old vicarage I would love a copy.We never seemed to take a photo and I have been looking on archives but no luck.

Vikki Curtis
