More about this scene
Looking west from the chalk hills east of the town, undeveloped to this day, Chesham nestles in the deep-cut valley of the River Chess. Nearer the camera is the bell turret of the old Market Hall, and beyond on the other side of the valley is the tower and spire of the parish church and to its left, beyond the cedar tree, is The Bury, Chesham's grandest house. Dating from 1712 and set in a landscaped park, it was built for the then Secretary to the Treasury, William Lowndes.
