More about this scene
Frith's photographer looks south down the High Street from the Broadway. All has gone on the right as far as and including the high five-pot chimney stack, but on the left the high three-storey building of the 1890s, once the Chess Vale Temperance Hotel, remains as shops and 'Stage 2' nightclub, while the 1898 bank beyond with the pinnacled gable is now 'Chandler and Friends' bar. Beyond, much is rebuilt, apart from the 18th-century three-storey building with a pediment and Venetian windows.
