More about this scene

Construction of St John's Priory was begun about 1075-76 when the Bishop of Lichfield, Peter de Leia, transferred the seat of his diocese to Chester. There was an earlier Saxon church on the site; according to local legend, King Harold survived the Battle of Hastings, lived out the remainder of his life in seclusion at Chester, and was buried in St John's.
