Coopers Close Chigwell Row 1948 1964

A Memory of Chigwell Row.

In September 1948 the Morton family moved into a brand new council house at number 3 Coopers Close Chigwell Row. Our father Ronal Morton and his wife Evelyn with my brothers Andrew and Douglas, shortly followed by Bruce born in January 1949. Our neighbours at No 1 were a Mr and Mrs Holt with their children John who went on to join the Navy and later editions Nigel and Pamela. At No 5 were Mr and Mrs Rolf and their sons Raymond and Terry.
Over the years if ever we had a loose tooth we were sent to see Mrs Rolf who an expert at pulling teeth!
The Whites lived at No 22, Bonnie and Len who were very good friends of our parents, their children were Elizabeth and John.
We exchanged with Mr and Mrs Bailey at number 20 in 1957 after I was born in 1955. Shortly after this Mr Bailey won the pools and purchased a new house at the back of the Maypole public house.
Does anyone remember Les the milkman, my brother Bruce used to help him on his round.
We would like to get the names of any other occupants of Coopers close around that time as we are putting together a little map of Close. Any help with this would be gratefully received, Thank You in advance.

Great to see this post! .... Do hope we get some more information ..... Andrew Morton
Hi, we moved in? not sure as I was a baby, born in 1949 but expect is was about 1950. We lived at 58, My dad, Bill Crown had the greengrocers in the village, my mum was Joan and I had a sister, Jill, my name is Nick. I remember Les the milkman very well, Also I think I remember Buster Bailey? I was friends with Stephen Jone who live in the corner house just down from us, there was a large green area where we had firework displays.Do you remember the swings as you entered the close? I loved Chigwell Row and went to school in the village from 1953 to 1956. My mum always won the parents race, I was a very proud son....Keep the memories
Thank you so much for all this information, it truly was a wonderful place to live. I was able to go back with one of my brothers a couple of years ago and we sat outside our old house remembering good times. You mentioned the swings but do you remember that they were moved to the field behind where I lived at number 20. I will pass your message onto my brothers and hopefully they will remember you.
I visited recently, seemed much smaller! But magical. I also went into the school where most of us would have gone...remember Miss Katwick? It hasn't changed and still has the old hooks for our coats. I would often cycle to the lake in Hainault Forest going down by the side of the common. On Sundays my parents would take us for a walk into the forest, over the common and up through a , what is now overgrown, gap....magic. there was a little pond up that way I believe with adders about. In Coopers Close we played marbles on the small green area on the right as you enter the close. On the left I remember scrumping fruit in what is now a car park for the two brewers. The number 26 bus would drop us of outside the pub, remember? Nick
My father, Linley Seaborn, was friendly with Bill Crown - they used to go racing together. I well remember Les the Milkman and his cheery shout of "Milko" and his electric milk cart. I also remember the horse and cart delivery of milk. I spent a lot of time roaming the Essex lanes on my bike and pony, and also Hainault Forest. I would love to hear from anyone who knew me or my parents. I am Jenny, and I went to Chigwell Row C of E CP school for several years, and spent a lot of time at Thirza House stables. I also spent a lot of time on the swings in Cooper's Close. When I was eight I was run over by the publican of the Two Brewers on Romford Road, quite badly hurt but obviously recovered. Many happy memories. Jenny
Hi My family lived in Coopers Close when it was first built. Not sure of the number but as you go into the road it was round on the left hand side about half way down the straight(ish) side. I think about no 20something but could be wrong. We werent there long as we moved in with grandparents in Chapel Lane as they needed nursing and that must have been 1950/51. Our surname was Luker and Barney was the eldest born 1944. Barney went from the village school to Chigwell primary as I started probably in 1951 as I was born in 1946. Sandra
