More about this scene

The ancient church of St Helen, known as 'the cathedral of the Fylde', dates from the 12th century and was once the parish church for Garstang, two miles away. A brass chandelier presented by a local builder after one of the River Wyre's severe floods was stolen about twelve years ago, but it was fortunately retrieved. There is a Norman font and a very old pulpit. In the churchyard are a number of interesting graves, including those of a medieval knight and of one of the Young Pretender's soldiers.

A Selection of Memories from Churchtown

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Churchtown

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I was born and raised at the School House, next door to the Horns Inn, as was my father and his siblings. I was married in St Helens church in 1942. This photograph, taken in 1960, shows the "bypass" which enabled the village to be freed from the noise of heavy traffic. My grandfather was the headmaster at the school and is buried in the churchyard. My father suceeded him as head. This site truly brings back childhood memories of the past.
