More about this scene

Standing on the site of what were once three fishermen's cottages, the Hesketh Arms was originally called the Black Bull. William 'Duke' Sutton was landlord of the Black Bull when he opened his bathing hut at South Hawes near what is now the junction of Duke Street and Lord Street. He later built the original hotel near the site, suffering it to be known as 'Duke's Folly'. South Hawes later became known as South Port, which eventually became Southport.

A Selection of Memories from Churchtown

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Churchtown

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

We moved to Churchtown in '61 from the North East. Attended the junior school attached to St Cuthbert's church. Remember the area very well, Botanical Gardens especially. Used to go fishing there even though it was prohibited [which boys didn't!]. Left in 1970. Fond memories
I run this place now and we are about to re-furbish. Great memories of fantastic guests, team and just a great pub with a new story to tell every day!
