More about this scene
The magnificent three-storey porch, England's largest and constructed 100 years after the tower, faces the Market Square. The tower soaring above was begun in c1400 in Perpendicular style; it was originally intended to have a spire, but structural settlement occurred and buttresses had to be incorporated. It is the largest church in Gloucestershire. The less mighty shop building next door advertises Hunt Tailors. We can see a lady shopper out in trousers, which would have been frowned on before the war.
