Ingleborough Hall Open Air School

A Memory of Clapham.

My name is John Starbuck I was a pupil at the open air school approximately 1954/56 and spent a happy time being looked after by all thr staff. We used to do lots of different activities like school lessons and lots of walking and playing in the streams, we also went on trips to Lancaster and Morcombe for the illuminations. We also meet every August at the Hall for reunion when approximately 30 former pupil's and our families meet up to talk about the old times and a few of us meet up in the New Inn at night, would love to hear from any persons from the village who remember those days.

Hi John.I just came across your page and it brought back some happy memories.I was also a pupil in the 1960;s and can relate to the trips to Morecambe and being taught by Miss Bale and Miss Leadbeater.Kind regards Shaun Hodson
Hi Shaun, thanks for your comment its always nice to hear from you. There is a Facebook page for Ingleborough Hall Boarding School Clapham with lots of names and old photos if you are able to look at.The reunions still take place but for the first time in 9 the Hall is not available for access but a group are meeting at Clapham villiage hall on Wednesday 5th August 10.00 usually for about 4 hrs . unfortunately this year I am unable to attend but I will still able to keep in touch my old friends via phone or Facebook. All the best John Starbuck
Hi to all. I was a pupil at Ingleborough Hall from 1952-54. I arrived in a very backward state having spend the previous 6 years (from age 2 to 8) in a TB hospital in Sheffield. I wore calipers on my left leg supported by wooden crutches and a 6" block added to my right shoe. Thanks to frequent visits to Leeds Infirmary under the care of Miss Bale, I was discharged from the school in 1955 walking absolutely normally. Past pupils may recall me under my nickname "Peggy" (i.e. peg-leg). Very happy times after years of loneliness are memories unforgettable.
Names I remember are: Doreen Wittam (Leeds), Larry Simpson (haifax) Miss Bale & Miss Leadbeater (of ourse). Plus the local vicar - his interest was that I was the leading church choir boy - having sung solo on many occasions Sorry about the many who I cannot remember.
Hi Gordon nice to hear from you sadly the reunions have stopped due to Ingleborough Hall now being a fully operated outward bound establishment for young school children so it's sort of reverted back to looking after children.
Hello, I was at the school in the 50s. And have a photograph of the church choir in the grounds of Ingleborough Hall School, Mr Foster was the name ?..remember. And Miss Leadbeater the head of the school, she took my bow & arrows off me Mmmmm...naughty boy? I am in the photograph.
I also have a photograph on the snow covered slope, sledging.... inc Carol Lockwood and others... I remember singing on the large staircase with a Christmas tree under the stairs....Remember this at all????
