Nelly Ward, My Great Grandmother - a Memory of Cleator Moor.

My Mum, Marilyn, was brought up in Cleator Moor, mostly by her Grandma, Nelly Ward. She had a sister called Kathy; their father was a GI! Wondered if anyone remembered Nelly, apparently she was a great character.

Do you have any old photos? My Mum would love photos as there don't seem to be many she can find. I am on facebook if you like....Becky Lingwood from Elvington, York

That's great! I'll tell my Mum. She has great memories of Nelly looking out for her, especially if there were any bullies!x

I remember Nelly very well. A very large woman, in contrast with her husband, Francie, who was quite small. She was extremely generous and always had a kind for me, every time I met her. I also remember your mother, Marilyn. We were pupils at St Patrick's Infant School at the same time, though I was a year or so older.

Tips & Ideas

Not sure what to write? It's easy - just think of an important place in your life and ask yourself:

  • How does it feature in your personal history?
  • What are your best memories of this place?
  • How has it changed over the years?
  • How does it feel, seeing these places again?
  • Do you remember stories about the community, its history and people?
