More about this scene

Originally sited on a ford over Firgreen Beck, Clifford was at one time the manor that included all of nearby Boston Spa. People from Clifford used to collect the money for the rights to use the spa water. Irish linen workers settled here in the mid 1800s. The remarkable Catholic church in the background is dedicated to St Edward, King and Confessor, and was completed in 1848. The tower is modelled on Angouleme Cathedral. The builder, Joseph Aloysius Hansom, had in 1836 patented the new safety cab bearing his name.
