More about this scene

The war memorial and car park occupy land on which Coleford's Market House once stood. When the English Civil War began in 1642, Parliamentary troops were garrisoned in Coleford. This presented a problem for local people, because the nearest market was in the Royalist stronghold of Monmouth. To solve the difficulty, the Parliamentary commander Colonel Berrowe established a market in Coleford. The original Market House was erected, destroyed soon after, and then rebuilt in 1661. Being a market town greatly enhanced Coleford's prosperity and status.
