The village main street is little changed, although Bel and the Dragon on the right is no longer also a garage. To the left, just out of view, is the Stanley Spencer Gallery in the old Methodist chapel of 1846. This quirky artist is Cookham's famous son, being born at Fernlea further down the High Street in 1891 and buried in the churchyard.
