Cowes From 1937 To 1955

A Memory of Cowes.

I was born in Cowes, so many lovely photos! I left for Canada in 1957, Vancouver Island. Sidney, BC, reminds me of a Canadian Cowes. I know all the locations that you display. Things changed a bit over the years, but on a visit I bought a lovely sweat shirt at Atkeys Chandlers, and stayed at the Solent Inn. I saw the old Denmark Road School is now Condos. We used to go to the big air raid shelters in the school grounds, during the War.
First ice cream I ever tasted came from Finches Shop on Denmark Road. Use to go up onto the bridge to be given cherries from a big tree near the railroad tracks. Had adventures visiting the gardens of bombed homes in the area, fish ponds, flowers. The steps from Northwood Park down to road near the Parade, we discovered a secret tunnel from there to Northwood House. It came out at an alcove on the stairs at the House. Smugglers? It was soon blocked off by adults. Cowes Week, with the fireworks. Swimming and shrimp nets on the beach, with a tomato and cheese roll from the kiosk. Julia Grammer, Cynthia Groves, Ivor Finch, Brenda Read, Brian Lord, many other childhood names can’t be recalled. Thank you for the photos
