Park Place

A Memory of Crewe.

When I was younger, my Mum and Dad moved from Liverpool and came to live in Crewe. We lived in the Huts from 1945 to 1957. I'm 84 years old now and I remember those days being the happiest times of my life. We lived at 53 Park Place and I lived there with my Mum Peggy Foley, Dad Peter Foley and Elsie, Jean and Peter my three siblings.
My name is May Foley (now Corbett) and I have a lot of great memories from my time living in the Huts. There are a lot of people I remember and some of these are Mr and Mrs Davies , The Vickers, The Egertons ,The Ansells , The Thackers ,The Hinds,The Tomkinsons,The Arrowsmiths,The Shaws,The Palins, The Cuthbertsons, Kath Harvey ,Joan Bennett,Tony Nutter,Billy Downing and Violet Wilson.
My Dad Peter worked at Crewe Works and My Mum Peggy worked at the Memorial Hospital.
We lived near the Queens Park and there were a lot of happy times in there to, like going on the rowing boats, listening to band playing in the band stand and also playing in the war shelters.
My Mum used to bake a lot , she would make Wedding cakes, trifles, mince pies, and toffee apples for anyone in the neighbourhood.
My Dad Peter organised the Queens Coronation in 1953 , he set up a Marquee where there was lots of food for everyone that wanted to get involved and even the Mayor joined in with the Celebrations and the whole neighborhood had lots of fun.
My brother Peter used to set up a cricket match in the street for him and his friends to play, he even used a bin lid for the wickets and the lads really loved playing the game.

Hi May. Great memories. I remember Peter really well. Playing cricket in the street, 6 over the Tomlinson hut. How good was Peter at makingg Bows and arrows from twigs we used get from the tip.Great times in the air raid shelters
.I can remember when I was about 7yo doing the shopping at the Co-op for a mrs Jones who must’ve had at least 12 cats. What a great Bonfire night we had in the middle of the green. Remember walking or catching the bus to school in all weathers, not many had cars. The memories are endless.
