Cricklade, ten miles from the Thames source, is an ancient town with evidence of Anglo-Saxon town walls as well as of Roman occupation. It has two medieval churches, the splendidly towered St Sampson behind the High Street, and the less grand St Mary's at the north end of the High Street, which has this fine complete 14th-century churchyard cross.
