Memory Of Belmont School

A Memory of Croydon.

I went to Belmont school about 1944 to 1950 when I changed due to 11 plus and went to Coloma Convent in Tavistock Road Croydon My very best friend was Gill Stokes and we were a very saucy pair and did everything together. We were always laughing and did lots of naughty things. Gill and I are still the closest friends and speak to each other every few days. We are both 80 now and share everything together including any problems. Gill now lives in US but over the years we try to see each other every few years although I don't expect we will be able to any more. We have always been so alike and laughed so much at the same things that we always said we are 'twinned' My greatest memory is of her turning up at my door unexpectedly on my 80 th birthday party. I remember the school so well as it was really a house. I remember the 16 and 18 bus that went into Croydon. I remember Thornton Heath pond with water in it. I remember Miss Allen. And Miss Jeffery .head mistress and Miss Grifiths music teacher I remember a lovely boy called John Wharton who I think died very young. I also remember a girl called Gill Webb who I saw many years ago in Croydon.,Lovely memories of Belmont school and of Croydon. I remember Grants who made lovely coffee and Debenhams who had an arcade where you could have donkey rides. Lovely memories and life goes by so fast but you never forget. Belmont will always remain in my memory of a lovely school
