Crystal Palace Childhood
A Memory of Crystal Palace.
I lived in Cintra Park, off Anerley Hill from 1950 to 1967 and remember the Paxton Arms on the corner of Palace Road. There was a general store on the next corner up owned at one time by the son of a friend of my mothers. I went to Ingram School in Thornton Heath. There were two stations then, one called the High (just off the Parade) and the lower one across the road virtually from Cintra Park. We played in the park and also in the bombed out houses in Sydenham. There were also two cinemas; the Odeon and the Century, both in Church Road. The Odeon, we used to go to for Saturday mornings - the ABC kids. My mother, was for a time in the late 1940's, the caretaker of St, Aubyns' Church, long since replaced by houses.
