Children's Ward, 1964 66, Cuckfield Hospital.

A Memory of Cuckfield.

I was a Staff Nurse on this ward. We were in a prefabricated building, and had to push patients to theatre with a waterproof covering over them, to protect from the weather. Quite a lot of our patients came from a local home for thalidomide children. Darling resilient tots, who wizzed around on specially made walkers when they were recovering from what ever they were admitted with. I was very happy working at Cuckfield Hospital. I met my husband whilst working at Cuckfield. He came with his team to Sussex to play cricket for the Met Police Force, against a local team. They came to the hospital social club after the match, and love blossomed!!. We married in April, 1966. I then moved to my new home and worked at Kings College Hospital. The trained Sisters and Staff Nurses who were single lived at Knowle House,Cuckfield, which has since been demolished to make way for a new housing development. We continued to visit extended family who lived in mid-Sussex, and had reason to visit relatives at the new hospital at Haywards Heath, when it was opened in 1991. A "lot of water has flown under the bridge" since then, and I now live in Norfolk, but a bit of me remains in Sussex.
