Hi all, my names Albert Griffiths and I've lived on John St Cullercoats for the last 7 years, and I'm wondering if anyone has any old photos of the school that used to be on John St, the reason I'm asking is because I believe there is still a bit of the school wall existing, and its in my back yard, so that is why I feel the urge to try and find out a bit more about it, Cheers All
I lived in the war damaged Stone House, Cullercoats which was situated within 10 ft stone walled enclosed gardens, adjacent to Stone House Cottage, fishermens cottages and a big hotel facing the road down to the beach. from birth until the age of 6 (1945 - 1951). We lived in 6 Promontory Terrace, which was on the border of Cullercoats and Whitley Bay, that was 1950 a time when the Fishermen's Cottages were just around the corner and we would have their Dressed Crab or the Wilecks as we called them. I too lived in Simpson Street No 37 it has been knocked down now but my Godmother Gladys Harrison still lives there on the opposite side of the road I also went to Cullercoats school I have very fond memories of the village my grandparents were Ernie and Lizzie Gill ( nee Jefferson ) John Wheatley 's chip shop was just opposite us in the back lane and the coal mans horse was next door . My Nana Simpson (nee Brunton) was a fisherwoman who used to sell fish on the front from a creel on her back years before I was born. My Grandad contracted Polio in his 50's and Nana had to work hard long hours to bring up her extensive family. My father was born and lived in Huddleston St, Cullercoats. My memories are of visiting my grandmother who lived in the upstairs flat of Huddleston St next to Barons the Fruiter and Wedderburns the Bakers. On the other side was McCallums, the general dealers (sold everything). The fish and chip shop was called John Whitleys and whenever I visited I always got an extra something on the order. ...see more
My grandparents lived in Simpson Street and auntie in Elizabeth Street. I am wondering if anyone remembers Garden Terrace, and the old school in John Street where my grandma worked? My grandfather was killed aboard the 'Lunula' in 1941 and his name was Edward Occulstone. He is listed at that time as living in Margarets Road and his name is on the cenotaph at Whitley Bay. My grandfather and his parents and siblings were all born and lived in or near Cullercoats. Their surname was Storey and my grandfather George emigrated to Australia with his wife and children in 1949. I have always wanted to visit the birthplace of George and try to find more about him.
