The 50's In Cullercoats

A Memory of Cullercoats.

We lived in 6 Promontory Terrace, which was on the border of Cullercoats and Whitley Bay, that was 1950 a time when the Fishermen's Cottages were just around the corner and we would have their Dressed Crab or the Wilecks as we called them. I was 8 year old and our favourite playground was the rocks and cliffs at Marconi Point, now gone as a Radio Station but those fond memories of a carefree youth, with the rocks and the beach to keep us totally engrossed in life as it was then. A little further up the coast was the Rock Bathing pool, that was closed down after the Polio Scare, I think I've got the correct era, we would swim in that or in the sea to the right of the pool, some would say that was not a good idea, but health and Safety hadn't been thought of then, Browns bay next to the pool was another disaster waiting to happen, my two brother and myself lashed together a raft with some old drums we found and off we went into the ocean 'or so we thought' if that wasn't enough to send our mother in a fit, we would play on the wreck ship that would appear on low tide, catching lobsters was the game, although we never did, that was always the grownup who would swarm over it. 'Where have all the crabs and lobsters gone?
And where has our youth gone? I kid you not, I thought I was going to be 10 year old FOREVER!! so how did I get to be 73?
