Darlington Circus

A Memory of Darlington.

Does anyone remember the annual circus that took place in South Park? We used to live in Clifton Road, and I well remember the animal procession going past our house as it made its way to the park, preceded by people playing trumpets etc . I remember particularly the elephants walking past our front door!

Great! - and a good source of organic fertilizer. Did you have a garden? Which number house did you live in?
We used to live at 52 Clifton Road, a flat above Jackson's butcher's shop opposite the cattle market. My Dad was a butcher employed by Charlie Jackson and worked in the Skinnergate premises. But his son Reginald put the rent up so high that he couldn't afford to pay and so we were evicted. We were rehoused by the Council. Hard times!
