The Last Days Of St John's Church Darwen
A Memory of Darwen.
I can remember when the redundancy was declared by the Blackburn Diocese and the worshipping community moved into the 'new' St John's School at the top of Turncroft..... with the assurance of a new church to be built a few yards up from the school site. The land was drained, but it never happened.
The old church of St John had a wonderful sanctuary and interior and as a school we used to have a service there once a week which Mr & Mrs Lomax would escort us to..... When it was being demolished dynamite had to be used to shift some of the gothic style structure.
If anybody remembers me - please respond to this brief account of my memories.
I used to at the age of 14 look after the setting out of the church in the school hall for services until the parish was amalgamated with Holy Trinity and became what is now St.Peter's Darwen.
