A view of Datchet High Street from The Green. Just before the turn of the century, and again soon after the Second World War, Datchet suffered serious flooding when the swollen Thames caused a pond in the village to overflow. Several anxious residents were isolated in their homes.

I was 5/6 years old and lived with my two sisters, older brother, baby brother and mum & dad in a cramped caravan that was given to us after the war.
We were called 'gypsies' but my dad worked at the Woolwich 'arms factory' as a machine-minder for the duration of the war. During the 'blitz' he had to do his his share of 'fire-watch' on the roof.

What a lovely site, it hasn't changed much since I left in 1966
First place I got off the bus in 2003 after 37 years away. It hadn't changed much to me.
A load of local young lads took over the hotel bar about this time, of all classes, much to the horror of residents and no doubt the owners, but they served Youngers Scotch Ale No 3 from the barrel, powerful stuff and cheap.
