More about this scene
This was the largest of three fortresses built by Henry VIII in 1538 to protect this stretch of Kent coast against the threat of invasion by Francois I of France. Six semi-circular bastions fan out from a round central keep, all surrounded by a massive moat. Although its defences were never tested by a foreign invader, during the Second World War the Germans succeeded in scoring a direct hit on the structure.
