More about this scene
Described in the 1880s as a 'small, quaint, and decayed town', Dedham's prosperity had climaxed in the early 1500s. It was essentially a wool town, and its great market was held in the wide stretch of road we see here. The house with the classical pediment is Sherman's, formerly a school teaching English and mathematics.
