In the early decades of the 19th century the district of Saddleworth covered 35 square miles and included over 70 hamlets and villages. Though within the parish of Rochdale, Saddleworth lay in the extreme south-west of the West Riding of Yorkshire and was long talked of as the part of Yorkshire where Lancastrians lived.
