More about this scene

Free from traffic and flanked by the old cottages, this post-war scene evokes an essence of earlier village days. The Twyn, the triangle of land on the right, so long the centre of the community, took shape in the late 1880s. This square, newly raised and planted with trees, was financed by the sale of part of the common to the Barry Docks & Railway Company – the shortfall was met by General Lee.

i lived in highwalls in no 21 moved in on june 1953 and spent after my wedding and lived there along time, lovely to see the old pictures shirley oakes

The Square Dinas Powys
I would say the date of this photograph is 1960 - 62. I am one of the three girls at the lower right of the photo and have a vague recollection of seeing the photographer standing on the back of a lorry? with a tripod. The other girls are my sister Hazel and a friend, Lesley. Wendy Lawday, nee COLES

Village Cricket, Rugby And The Mount
The Common, which is a delightful huge stretch of open ground from Cardiff Road to the Westra, was the sporting centre for the villagers. Here the cricket club played and the rugby club also held their matches too. Just off the Common is the home of both the Bowls Club and tennis club. The Bank And Three Horse Shoes, Dinas Powys
My dad, Charles Davies, became the manager of this branch of the National Provincial Bank in 1965 and we moved to the village to live on the Twyncyn, off the Common in 1966. He remained there as manager for quite some time - seeing through the change to it being a Nat West bank. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
