More about this scene

The relative tranquillity of this scene belies the common's historic role as a venue for altogether more rowdy activities. Extremely popular in the Vale were 'Gwylmabsant' – days of celebration and revelry of ecclesiastic origin. By the 18th century these boisterous gatherings had become distinctly non-secular and the scourge of Methodism. John Wesley himself bore witness to a 'revel' in Dinas Powis on 14 September 1741.
