Dorchester, Roman Amphitheatre 1891

More about this scene
Very little of the Roman occupation of Dorchester, Durnovaria, remains. However, the amphitheatre was a converted hillfort, known as Maumbury Rings, a substantial circular bank with a pair of opposing entrances. These banks were built 4,000 years ago in the early Bronze Age, long before the Roman invasions in AD43. Here, Roman and British spectators witnessed fighting gladiators, men fighting against animals, and sometimes drama productions.
