More about this scene
building the church. The church is a short distance from the Nower, another one of Dorking's parkland areas. The Barclay Family of Bury Hill gave the Nower to the people of Dorking on the celebration of Queen Victoria's Jubilee. Many other denominations made their mark on Dorking. In 1672, following the Declaration of Indulgence, licences to preach in Dorking were issued to James Fisher and John Wood, who formed the Independent Congregational Church. A meeting house was established in West Street in 1719, which survived until 1834. The new building, which stands now, is the United Reformed Church; it has an attractive Italianate frontage, and was designed by the Dorking architect and builder, William Shearburn Senior. The Friends Meeting House stands on Butter Hill in South Street, and below it is the beginning of the extensively-dug caves.
