More about this scene
The Irish Sea can be as flat as a mill pond, but when an easterly, south-easterly or north-easterly gale blows up, this is what happens at Douglas. Sir William Hillary, founder of the RNLI, settled in Douglas in 1808. He became so concerned by the loss of seamen in local wrecks that he erected the Tower of Refuge in Douglas Bay.
