More about this scene
One of the finest fortresses in England, Dover Castle traces its history back to the Iron Age earthworks on the site. But the great keep, the inner bailey and much of the curtain walling were built by Henry II between 1168-86, at the then colossal cost of £3,000. Further additions to the defences were made by Henry III, and also during the Napoleonic Wars, and again in the Second World War.
