A Memory of Downderry.

I lived in Downderry until I was 27. I was friends with Helen Blake whose family ran the PO when we were children, sadly after the loss of her mother we lost touch. I would love to contact her again.
My family (Hill) were potato merchants and owned the Eddystone Country Club. Apparently my great uncle Fred Mitchell was a coal merchant there. I have no info about him, but remember Auntie Hilda Mitchell who lived in Rock Cottage and eventually Dunroamin caravan owned by Lambies and my husband and I lived in Prospect Villa.

I posted some Downderry memories several years back on this site. I have just hit 60, and I reflect on life more than ever. When you face death and battle for your life, TWICE in your lifetime, certain things change. To face serious illnesses, whether physical or psychological, tends to make you focus on your own mortality. As I posted a few years ago, I had 12 unbelievable summer holidays in Downderry between 1983 - 1996. I stayed, with my family, at Eddystone Cottage, a wonderful guest house run by the amazing Jim & Elsie Mercer. Sadly, these beautiful people are no longer with us. They were like family. The rich memories that I treasure are many. Whether it was the many boozy encounters at the Eddystone Country Club with Jim, or being told off by Elsie for visiting that establishment, it was all given and taken in good grace and humour. I miss so many of the wonderful characters and people I have met over the years, sadly some who have left us. I went back to Downderry in 2009, with my wife, as she had never been there, staying at the Inn on the Shore for a few nights. It brought memories flooding back. The one thing missing was THE EDDYSTONE COUNTRY CLUB after its sad demise.
So many memories and so many wonderful people.

I am currently writing a book about Downderry. As writing is my profession, I thought this to be a good idea, and has expressed a great degree of interest. Anyone who has any interesting stories, anecdotes, memories or photos to contribute to the book, please contact me via email

There is also a reserved list for the book.

Many Thanks
