Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Friday 19th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. More about this scene

After climbing through the narrow streets of Durham, we suddenly come upon a dramatic opening into the light and space of Palace Green, dominated by the awesome cathedral. This great space was created by Bishop Flambard at the beginning of the 12th century: he decided to demolish the clutter of wooden houses and the market place because of the potential fire hazard to the castle and cathedral.

Not Built By Robert Stephenson.
The viaduct that strides across Durham City was completed in 1856 and was open initially to goods (freight traffic) in the August of that year, the line had failed a safety inspection with regards to the working of passenger trains and did not open to passengers until 1/4/1857. The route and the viaduct was designed by Thomas E. Harrison and was constructed by Richard Cail of Gateshead.

The Temporary Chapel, Bede College Durham
This photograph of 1929 is of special interest to me because of the long, white building in the top left-hand corner of the image. This was the temporary chapel at the College and served in that capacity from 1925 until the building of the present permanent chapel in 1939. The Tin School

My dad went to the tin school and I’m looking for anyone who may have known him as my sisters and I would like to make a book of story’s from his time there for his 60th his name is jimmy Layfield and he had an older brother called Keven Layfield

The Tin School
I was at this school from 1949-57, when I lived in Longacres. I seem to remember a bronze plaque on the hall wall stating that it had been built in 1908. It had evidently been built as a temporary structure, but had managed to last until the early '80s. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
