The Trent and Mersey Canal was completed in 1777. Like the Bridgewater Canal it was built by James Brindley and it linked with the Bridgewater at Runcorn - the two canals meet within another tunnel, yet further reminding us of the complexity of the engineering required to build even the earliest canals.

I broke down in the tunnel in the early 1970s, my kids thought it was great pushing us out off the tunnel wall, they were realy black at the end. I made sure it didn't happen going back!
