St Peter's is Early English in style and is appropriately in Church Road, Earley, now part of Reading. The foundation stone was laid by the Hon Miss Mary Ann Ursula Addington, daughter of Viscount Sidmouth, on 20 April 1843 after a service conducted by the Vicar of Sonning, the Rev Hugh Nicholas Pearson. The Dean of Salisbury gave an address with a large crowd in attendance. The fabric used in the building is grey vitrified brick in the 76-feet-high north-west tower and the main body of the church, which was consecrated on 14 May 1844, although the aisles and chancel were added in 1882-83. The architect was John Turner.
