This village near Midhurst was built mainly to house employees of the Cowdray Estate, famed for the landscaped park and polo playing. St Mary's church stands near the park gate and contains the tomb of the first Lord Montague, who entertained Queen Elizabeth I at Cowdray House. The conserved ruins of the house, a Tudor mansion damaged by fire in 1793, are situated near the River Rother. Beside the church is Easebourne Augustinian Priory. After the Dissolution, the buildings continued in use as a private house.
