The first part to be opened, in 1861, was that on the right, and the rest was added in the 1870s and 1882. Later all the decorative work - finials, dormers, chimneys and belfry - was removed, leaving a much plainer facade, but the school survived until 1990, afterwards being adapted as Chequer Mead Arts Centre. Here some school children - including girls in pinafores (then the normal garb) - pose on the playing field.
