School Days

A Memory of Easter Compton.

I was a pupil at Easter Compton Infants School and remember Mrs Hunt Well . I also remember coke stoves used in winter and Mrs Withers the dinner lady. Meals were cooked elsewhere and brought to the School in hot boxes and Mrs Withers served them . Any left overs went across the road to Mrs Boyett who fed the pig with it.
I also remember the cane which stood in the corner which on one occasion was used.
Mrs Hunt also played a record to which we had to sing to, I did not like singing and did not like that record either. Listen with Mother was switched on there being no tv back then, if we we noisy or somebody talked she would turn it off.
The loos these were outside and not the flush type bucket and chuck it and some one had the unpleasant job of emptying these .
There was a climbing frame that we used under supervision .
We had a visit from the school photographer one day and he arrived In the middle of P E so we had to be photographed in our PE kit so the group photo was not the best or one to be proud of.
All in all there have been good memories and who can remember the text on the front wall of the school just under the bell says the Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, this being a church school.
