Redmans

A Memory of Eccles.

At the bottom of Church Street was the wonderful shop of Redmans - use to love going in there for all the fresh food. and if I remember rightly Woolworths was also at the bottom .

I remember going into the store whilst attending Eccles Parish School to buy one penny's worth of broken biscuits in1955 and the highlight was we kids got to ride on the first escolater in the Redmans store l will never forget that amazing experience as a child..
Hi Sandra. Don't remember the escalator but that doesn't matter it was what the store sold.
Also round the corner was the Tripe shope which when mum and I were in Eccles , we use to go in and get pigs trotters for my grandfather.
Woolworths was in the middle of Church Street, opposite the Church on the corner of John William St.
I don't think Redmans had an escalator, it was single story. You may be thinking of the Co-op's Centenary House which opened in the late fifties/early sixties, they had three or maybe four floors with escalators. They also had a cafe upstairs where we used to get tea and toasted tea cakes slathered in butter. Happy days.
